a bit about Jake

Jake specializes in vibraphone, marimba, glockenspiel, and piano.  He has a jazz and classical background, but enjoys playing all kinds of music, from trad jazz to R&B to hip hop to singer-songwriter to video game music.  Jake is also a composer, arranger, and songwriter, drawing from a wide musical palette. He has written music and lyrics for musical theatre, and is member of the BMI Advanced Musical Theatre Workshop.

Jake grew up in Los Angeles, attending Harvard-Westlake School in North Hollywood, CA.  He went on to earn a BA in Music and Computer Science at Columbia University, graduating Magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, while studying jazz vibraphone at Juilliard.  Jake spends most of his time in New York, but also returns home to LA often.  One key difference about the two cities is that when in LA, he will throw his instrument into the car and drive; in New York, he almost always uses the subway (or buses!) to transport his vibes or marimba.  Rush hour in a car is bad, but rush hour on the train with a vibraphone is worse.

Jake began his musical journey before he realized it, born into a musical family where his mom giving vocal lessons, dad playing piano, and parents rehearsing for cabaret performances were common events in the living room.   His sister would later join the fight for piano time.  Collectively, Karen, Alan, Molly, and Jake form the Von Chaps, an internationally touring family band.  In fact, Jake made his professional debut with the Von Chaps in 2007 at the Edye Second Space in Santa Monica, CA.

Jake performs in a wide variety of settings, including concert halls, jazz clubs, music festivals, subway stations, and parks.  In New York, he's played at Carnegie Hall, Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center, Dizzy's, Blue Note, Smalls, Symphony Space, Shapeshifter Lab, Knitting Factory, and Bowery Electric, among others.  He also enjoys busking, especially under the arch at Washington Square Park with duo partner Jasper Dutz.  Together, they are known as Champion Milkshake, and are part of MTA's Music Under New York program.  In Los Angeles, Jake has performed at Catalina Jazz Club, California Plaza, Vibrato, and Vitello's.  He has also performed at the Singapore Formula One Grand Prix, SXSW, JAS Aspen, and Bonanza Campout music festivals.
